A year ago, Western Union and the US Department of Justice agreed to pay nearly $ 600 million in fines for tolerating fraudulent transfers. Victims can request repayment until mid-February.

Victims of a scam via the money transfer service provider Western Union have three weeks to claim their claim to a refund of the lost money. This is reminiscent of the state criminal police Hessen. A year ago, the US company had agreed to pay the US Department of Justice $ 586 million in compensation for complicity in an international fraud scam. If you are convinced that a cash transfer via Western Union was fraudulent in the period between January 1, 2004 and January 19, 2017, you can request a repayment until February 12.
"Profit more important than own customers" In the rip-off, the fraudsters were therefore the victims compared as family members, prosecutors or alleged support staff from companies such as Microsoft. They then asked for financial help, threatened with investigations or promised profits, loans or a job. The LKA Lower Saxony lists some of the typical cases in which Western Union was abused as a payment method.
If the victims then transferred money via Western Union they never received the promised consideration. Western Union was partly to blame, because the company not only covered fraudulent employees, but continued to target them, because the transfers were so lucrative. Western Union agreed in early 2017 in the record penalty and a law firm was finally entrusted with their settlement.
Victims of the fraud were subsequently contacted by the firm Gilardi & Co. and provided with the necessary documents. On a specially created website, alleged victims can also report themselves. Among other things, the site – which is currently largely unavailable – explicitly states that not only US citizens or US-based victims are entitled to such a payment. Anyone who does not submit an application by February 12 will also lose his or her potential claim to payment.
