Turkish President does not want to allow "Kurdish state" in Syria

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017 | bitcoin updates

ANKARA (AFP) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan does not want to allow a "Kurdish state" in Nordsyria under any circumstances. "We will not allow and will never allow the PYD and YPG to build a so-called state in Northern Syria," Erdogan said Tuesday in Ankara. He accused the Kurdish Party of the Democratic Union (PYD) and its military arm, the People's Defense Units (YPG), to create a "Terrorkorridor to the Mediterranean". Erdogan said Turkey will continue to fight against "terrorist organizations" wherever we find them. Ankara regards the PYD as a terrorist organization because of its close ties with the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Despite sharp protests from Turkey, the US supports the YPG in the fight against the jihadist militia Islamic state (IS) with weapons and special forces. Ankara had intervened a year ago in Nordsyria to push the IS militia and YPG back from the border. It has recently been speculated that Erdogan could launch another campaign against the Kurds in the region of Afrin in the north-west of Syria. At the beginning of August, he had announced "new and important steps" against the Kurds. On Monday, he also talked about a Turkish-Iranian operation against the PKK in Iraq.
