Whether heat waves, storms, droughts, floods – developing countries are the main victims of weather disasters. But in Germany, too, the risk is increasing. Researchers urge to change direction.

Storms, heat, floods and heavy rain: In Germany, extreme weather events are increasing. Last year, the Federal Republic moved from the 64th to the 42nd place of the most affected states on the climate risk index of the environmental protection organization German Watch. 15 people died as a result of extreme weather, the damage amounted to almost 4 billion dollars (about 3.5 billion euros). The numbers were released on Thursday at the World Climate Change Conference in Bonn.
Federal government should make more effort Researchers are therefore calling for stronger efforts for climate protection from the next federal government. "The coalition negotiators in Berlin have it in their hands whether they open the door to climate chaos – or secure stability for Germany and the world," said Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, in Berlin. There, the German Climate Consortium (DKK), which brings together leading scientists, commented on the climate conference.
The researchers pointed out that today's global warming affects by 1 degree worldwide. "Weather extremes are increasing and hit us in Germany, such as heavy rain," said Schellnhuber. Especially in poorer countries, droughts, floods or hurricanes could trigger whole "episode cascades". In Puerto Rico, for example, one of the devastating hurricanes of the fall destroyed the economic development of years within hours.
Caused by the USA itself heavily affectedInterface 10 of the Risk Climate Index stands the USA. "So you are not only one of the causes of climate change, but also the victims," said Vera Künzel, one of the authors of the report. According to the Climate Risk Index, more than half a million people died between 1997 and 2016 as a direct consequence of 11,000 extreme weather events.
Small island states are particularly vulnerable. Thus Haiti was hit by the strongest hurricane in 50 years in 2016 and Fiji by the strongest hurricane measured there. And the current year 2017 could, according to the current state of affairs, become the world's biggest damage caused by extreme weather, as Germanwatch further stated.
Heatwave, Hurricane, FloodWithin the last 20 years from 1997 to 2016, Honduras, Haiti and Myanmar are the hardest hit countries. Germany has been one of the most affected industrial nations in the long-term index since 1997. The country suffered, therefore, especially under the long 2003 heat wave, heavy storms such as the storm Kyrill 2007 and repeated "century floods" on the Elbe, Danube and Oder.
Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Thursday that he is donating $ 50 million (€ 43 million) to protect the climate. The money goes to partners outside the US for the first time. Just last month, Bloomberg announced that it would donate $ 64 million to protect the environment after Trump's government announced plans to dismantle Barack Obama's climate program.
