The Russian police arrested the opposition Alexey Navalny at an unauthorized demonstration in the center of Moscow. Security forces intercepted him on Tverskaya Street on his way to his rally, Nawalny's team said Sunday. The 41-year-old confirmed this on Twitter. Hundred government opponents followed the protest call of the opposition in Moscow and St. Petersburg. "Boycott, boycott" and "Putin disappears!" Chanted the crowd. Nawalny had called nationwide for a "voter strike". This protesting his exclusion from the presidential election in March. He is not allowed to stand because of a controversial probation sentence. Prior to the demonstration, the police had searched the politician's Moscow office and arrested employees. The security forces broke open the door and blurted out a video message, Nawalny and his team said. For this they published a video. The police searched for a bomb, Nawalny wrote. "This is a good illustration of how the police in Russia have changed," he commented. According to his spokeswoman, some employees were arrested. "Your life is at stake," Nawalny said in a video message. "How many more years do you want to live with these thieves, bigots and mean ones?" In the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg, the routes of the rallies were not approved. In some provincial towns in Siberia, the first demonstrations took place, according to police, with a few dozen participants and without incident. On Saturday Nawalny had reaffirmed his protest call. "Staying at home would be the signal: 'I will hold this out for another six years' and we must not give them such signals (the government)." The well-known blogger Nawalny had already organized several major demonstrations against governance and corruption in 2017. Hundreds of people were arrested. (dpa, Reuters)
