South Africa: ruling party ANC chooses Ramaphosa as new chief – Politics

Monday, December 18th, 2017 | bitcoin updates

In South Africa, delegates from the governing party ANC have voted Vice President Cyril Ramaphosa by a narrow margin as chairman. Thus, the 65-year-old is likely to compete for the ANC as the most promising candidate in the 2019 presidential election. 2440 delegates voted for Ramaphosa, who relegated his rival Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, ex-wife of current head of state Jacob Zuma, to second place, an electoral commission spokeswoman said Monday. Dlamini-Zuma got 2261 votes. The election had been delayed several times since Saturday.Ramaphosa is considered a pro-business and pragmatic politician. The former union leader went into politics in the 1990s after the end of the racist apartheid regime and soon became under President Nelson Mandela ANC Secretary General. A few years later, he switched to business and became a multi-millionaire with investments in the mining sector. Many of the delegates wanted to distance themselves from corruption. Many congress delegates had spoken out for him to dissociate themselves from the corruption scandal overshadowed by President Zumas. The head of state, on the other hand, supported his ex-wife, a former minister and head of the Commission of the African Union, relatively openly. Zuma was previously also party chairman. He did not run again, but wants to remain head of state until 2019. It is expected that the ANC will then achieve a majority again. In 2014, the ANC won around 62 percent of the vote. The convention of the ANC (African National Congress) lasts until Wednesday. (AP)
