Scene area in Friedrichshain: The RAW site is 150 years old – Berlin

The memorial for the Communists Franz Stenzer and Ernst Thälmann, erected on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Reichsbahnauswerfungswerk (RAW) 50 years later, looks like a casually relic of a past culture. At the flagpole no SED flag greets more, but a shaggy metal skeleton. On a bollard post they painted a pixelated Che Guevara, fits somehow to it. Nevertheless, every few years, real old communists meet here to commemorate their martyrs. The Three from RAW. Unusual for RAW's alternative cult scene: The gala is a real ball with an evening gown. There will be three women, for whom RAW has long been at the center of her life: Kristine Schütt, Frauke Hehl and Käthe Bauer. "The first years were like camping" All three are seen as artists, but also as part of a solidarity community with anticommercial impetus. It is not the money that dominates the RAW, but the free unfolding of one's own dreams and talents. That is why Kristine Schütt and Frauke Hehl came to the premises almost 20 years ago, moved into the "official house" and the administrative building, took possession of the "material and device store". They received regular leases from the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, which had concluded a three-year contract with the railway owner. 150 years of the RAW site – 20 years of alternative culture1 of 6Foto: Thilo Rückeis 29.09.2017 20: 50To the 100th anniversary of the RAW site, the communists Franz Stenzer and Ernst Thälmann were conceived. "The first three years were like camping," recalls Kristine Schütt, then at the beginning of the year. The water had to take her from a central tapping point, the stream from a snack bar. The railway had capped all lines on the site when the plant was closed down in 1994. On the other hand, the pioneers who came to the site in 1999 lived in a garden of Eden, surrounded by high brick walls, surrounded by old trees. "This was gigantic at the beginning", says Frauke Hehl. The total calmness, in the middle of Friedrichshain, autofrei and autonomous. For the eight-hectare site, there was only one central access. Of today's problems – party tourists, drug dealers, toddlers, delivery – was still completely unaffected. "This is no longer the kind of open space, as we have once visioned it," says Kristine Schütt. Nevertheless her heart hangs on the terrain, and her existence anyway. Vivico, the real estate dealer of the railway, has been forging plans for the use of the site. The material and equipment store, a long-stretched building with rehearsals for music, dance and circus, has been renovated with funding. A skater club built the former blacksmith's workshop into its central training camp.

Investor followed on investor – and nothing went ahead yet Vivico lost patience and sold in 2007 to a German-Icelandic investor company, so began many years of conflict, and all the construction plans were waste. The investors pulled each other in court, in 2015 they eventually sold to the Kurth real estate from Göttingen. And everything began again. Juniorchef Lauritz Kurth is committed to RAW's alternative culture, but also wants to create retail and commercial space for companies. The fact that the former wheel-set-up, a dilapidated ruin from the greenery of the RAW, escaped the demolition and is currently being renovated, value the artists as a trust-building measure. The site in the eastern area of the RAW, with the halls which were most recently used by the Streetfoodmarkt Neu Heimat, has secured the International Campus AG. There are co-working offers planned. "We want a diverse use of the terrain for neighbors, families and people from the neighborhood," says spokesman Thomas Rücker. In the autumn, a dialogue process with public planning workshops will start, according to the taste of the green councilor of town council Florian Schmidt. The 130 years, when the RAW was nothing else but a large railway, the artists largely ignore at their jubilee. At first, a former Reichsbahner had helped them to find their way, later the contact was canceled, says Kristina Schütt. On October 1, 1867, the site was put into operation as the "Royal Prussian Railroad Workshop Berlin II" – a lonely settlement in front of the city wall. The Oberbaum bridge and the surrounding old buildings arose only decades later. Before the First World War 1200 people were working on the premises. The Prussian Ostbahn had a house built and an "ambulatory" for the medical care of their workers; in the GDR theater was played, today the building is dilapidated and may not be used. In 1967 the RAW received the nickname Franz Stenzer, a communist Reichstagsbgeordneter and Eisenbahner, who was murdered in the Dachau concentration camp in 1933.
