ROUNDUP: First automakers return discounts on diesel replacement | News

ESSEN / FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) – At the beginning of the year, several car manufacturers have reduced or canceled their exchange premiums for older diesel cars. After the regular discount study of the CAR Center of the University of Duisburg-Essen, seven importers – Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Honda (Honda engine), Hyundai (Hyundai engine), Kia, Jeep and Peugeot- closed their respective programs in January. Ford (Ford Motor) has reduced its "environmental bonus" associated with a guarantee in height. The general discount level has decreased significantly compared to the end of the year, study director Ferdinand Dudenhöffer said. However, it was still well above the same month last year. It looks very much like the carmakers have set themselves a "certain fatigue in the scrapping race". The self-registrations and the price advantages offered via Internet platforms are also declining. Nevertheless, German manufacturers sold significantly more vehicles in January than in the same month last year. A good 269 000 cars were newly registered, which corresponds to an increase of about twelve percent, as the Association of the Automotive Industry announced on Friday in Berlin. "The start of the year was successful," said Association President Matthias Wissmann. But he does not expect that the growth will remain as high as in January. Nine percent more orders came from Germany and four percent from abroad. Only every third new car in Germany had a diesel engine in January; the proportion drops because of the exhaust gas scandal for months. Dudenhöffer had earlier warned of a "scrapping hangover". After the rebate wave is over, it will be difficult to sell more new cars. In a saturated market like Germany, high rebates did not generate additional demand, but only pull-forward effects that will be felt throughout the year. / Ce / DP / mis
