BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The rapid growth of rents in Germany has partially slowed down. Rents were still rising, but slower in existing housing than in previous years, as the German Real Estate Association (IVD) reported on Friday in Berlin. For a mid-sized apartment built after 1949, new tenants paid an average of 6.28 euros net rent per square meter – 2.4 percent more than in the previous year. In 2016, the increase was still at 3.4 percent. Rents also rose by 2.4 percent (2016: 3.2 percent) even for apartments of good value. Also in the metropolises with more than 500,000 inhabitants, comparable rents grew on average by only 2.9 percent, instead of 3, as in the previous year. 3 percent. The gap was wide apart: rents in Berlin continued to rise sharply by 6.1 percent to 8.75 euros per square meter. By contrast, rents in the state capitals of Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart and Dusseldorf did not change at all compared with the previous year. According to IVD President Jürgen Michael Schick, the trend shows that new buildings had a dampening effect. The association, which represents real estate consultants, brokers, experts and administrators, had evaluated contracts for the study from April to September 2017 in some 370 cities and municipalities./cpe/DP/stb
