New No. 1: Good Year for Jeff Bezos: How he became the richest man in the world in 2017 | News

Jeff Bezos managed to oust Microsoft founder Bill Gates from first place in the world's richest people this year. This was made possible by the continued uptrend of the Amazon share, which gained more than 55 per cent in dollar terms this year alone.
100 billion record cracked

Due to the outstanding performance of his Amazon participation, Bezos even managed to surpass an unbroken record since 1999 by Bill Gates. According to the financial services provider Bloomberg, the assets of Bezos should have jumped above the threshold of 100 billion US dollars in October 2017 for the first time. Since 1999, except for the Microsoft founder no private person could overcome this high hurdle.
Public benefit instead of self-interest

According to recent calculations, Bill Gates currently has a fortune of about 90.2 billion US dollars. However, in recent years, the inventor of Windows donated substantial sums of money to charitable causes around the world. Without this outstanding commitment, which included the sale of some 700 million Microsoft shares, he would still be considered the richest man in the world today. Even Bezos donated Amazon shares worth about half a billion dollars. However, the multi-billionaire puts a much larger amount into new projects and visions.
Visionary like Elon Musk

Like Tesla founder Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos has a keen interest in modern space travel. To finance its space company Blue Origin, he sells, according to their own information, Amazon shares worth about one billion dollars. The company, based near Seattle, is focused on the further development of orbital flight systems. Unlike Musk's SpaceX, however, the core focus of Blue Origin is on the Moon, not Mars.
