Merkel: Economic cooperation with Turkey continues to decline News

BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) wants to increase the economic pressure on Turkey to reach a release of the Germans imprisoned there. "We will have to reduce our economic cooperation with Turkey and put projects under review," she told the Passauer Neue Presse (Saturday). It is outrageous that a number of German citizens are in prison in Turkey. "We care for the detainees consularly as well as we can, but this is also made difficult by Turkey in some cases." Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) also sees no basis for further EU accession negotiations with Turkey. He said in the SWR: "We can not negotiate with a country that neglects human rights that disregards freedom of the press and puts the citizens of the European Union in prison without a visible cause." The talks with Turkey have been running for 50 years without result. That is why other forms of co-operation should be talked about "when the Turkish government changes again." SPD chancellor candidate Martin Schulz also accepts the annulment of the Ankara refugee agreement between Turkey and the EU. As the Turkish government now is, it can not become a member of the EU. If the consequences were the termination of the refugee agreement, "then we have to cope with it," Schulz told Deutsche Welle on Saturday. "And then we have to look after the refugees, I'm not ready to go to the knees before Mr Erdogan, I can not be blackmailed." Relations between Germany and Turkey have been straining for months. The reason for this is the imprisonment of German citizens for political reasons. Currently, eleven Germans are being held in Turkish custody for suspected political offenses, for instance because of alleged support from terrorists or putschists. The federal government calls for their release. Turkey also calls for the extradition of terror suspects from Germany. Also the Green-top candidate Cem Özdemir demanded to exert more economic pressure on Ankara and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He pleaded in the "world" to suspend the Hermes guarantees, to deliver no armaments, and to issue a clear travel warning – "until Erdogan freed the German hostages." The guarantees are intended to protect German exporting companies from losses caused by missing payments from their foreign business partners. / Sk / DP / zb
