In a podcast on Europe's most important games fair, Gamescom, the Federal Chancellor referred to funding programs designed to strengthen the creative industry.
Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) considers the promotion of the development of computer games in Germany to be viable. "We can continue to grow," the Chancellor said in an interview published on Saturday on her website. The games industry is a "very important". Merkel pointed to subsidy programs and the fact that the sector is increasingly being strengthened as part of the creative economy in cultural policy.
She said that prejudices were overcome and games were being built as cultural assets and educational institutions, she said, "for the actual social breakthrough," Merkel said. In the digital field, there is a big skilled labor force. This is why we are considering "how we can make a more targeted contribution to the fact that we are working together internationally and that Germany is a good location". One has to be careful that in the private sector, creatives are not "bought away immediately if they grow a bit".
Games industry demands more promotion
For the first time, Merkel will open the Gamescom fair in Cologne next week. The Federal Association of the German Games Industry (Game) and the Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU) called for the introduction of a development promotion for computer and video games in Germany the previous day. Although Germany remains one of the largest sales markets in the world, it loses "the connection", according to a statement.
What else the visitors of the Gamescom expects, the editors Martin Holland, Martin Fischer and Fabian Scherschel discuss in the #heiseshow.
