Tuesday, September 19th, 2017 | bitcoin updates

The actor Burghart Klaußner (68) is one of the first five scholarship holders of the Thomas Mann house in Los Angeles. Also nominated were the Berlin-based sociologist Jutta Allmendinger, the literary scholar and Thomas-Mann researcher Heinrich Detering, the microelectronic engineer Yiannos Manoli and the journalist Sylke Tempel ("Internationale Politik"). The Federal Foreign Office bought the ex-villa of Thomas Mann for around 12.5 million euros last year in order to save them from demolition. Outstanding personalities from Germany are to deepen the dialogue with the USA in the "Thomas Mann House" to deal with questions of the times, as Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) and Minister of Cultural Affairs Monika Grütters (CDU) jointly declared. The first scholarship holders are to inaugurate the house, which is currently being renovated, in 2018 and live and work there.Gabriel: "Cultural exchange is indispensable" Grütters called the acquisition a great happiness and at the same time a great obligation. Gabriel said: "In difficult times, in which we are separating many things across the Atlantic, the cultural exchange is essential for open societies and for our common transatlantic value fundament." In the mansion on the western edge of Los Angeles – in Pacific Palisades – had the family man after the emigration from Nazi Germany from 1942 to ten years lived. Thomas Mann (1875-1955) wrote works like "Joseph, the Breeder," "Doctor Faustus," and "The Selected." The organization of the new program on site has taken over the nearby artist's residence Villa Aurora. (AP)
