If the safety system for the microsleep warning is missing in the truck, Ford's SafeCap will help in the future.

Tired or even briefly falling truck drivers are a great danger – not only for themselves, but also for all other road users. Although there are now permanently installed in the vehicle assistance systems that can detect microsleep, but these are expensive and far from being installed in every new truck. Especially in the poorer regions of the world, the technology is rarely installed, if only because it is relatively complex and complex.
The Brazilian Ford subsidiary now wants to tackle the problem with an external solution: a smart wearable with specifically adapted digital technology. This is a cap called "SafeCap," Technology Review reported in its online edition ("Trucker Safety Cap").
Affordable alternativeThe headgear contains a mini calculator and sensors such as accelerometer and gyroscope, which can detect together when the wearer threatens to collapse – for example, when the head no longer stare forward, but tilts sideways. If the fatigue or the nodding is detected, the system warns with noise, light signals and vibrations – this is also a small corresponding engine installed, as it is known from smartphones. The entire electronics fits into the lining of a regular trucker cap – including battery.
It is still unclear whether the SafeCap really comes on the market. So far only prototypes are available. The project was developed as part of a collaboration with the Brazilian creative agency GTB, which according to its own statements was flooded with inquiries at a commercial vehicle trade fair – not just from Brazil but from around the world. In any case, the SafeCap should be cheaper than fixed systems.
