HDR tested under Windows 10 v1709: With Nvidia klappts, AMD and Intel fail

Youtube shows with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update finally HDR videos, but only with current Nvidia graphics cards of the series GeForce GTX 1000. With AMD and Intel it does not work so far.

The Case Creators Update (v1709) released on October 17 makes Windows 10 fit for the playback of HDR videos without the need for any additional software. However, the graphics card must contain an HDR-compatible GPU and output its image signals via a HDCP-2.2 protected connector of the type DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0. The display must also support the copy protection standard HDCP 2.2 as well as HDR and the 10-bit color reproduction.
Many prerequisites for bright colors

HDR and extended color turn on, otherwise it does not play with the playback.

Whether the HDR playback works, is the easiest to test with Youtube. On the streaming platform, there are already many free HDR clips – such as "The HDR Channel". We have selected for our test the video "Cannon Beach Oregon HDR UHD". So that Youtube plays the HDR version of the clip, you have to turn on the HDR function under Windows 10 v1709 first. These can be found in the display settings under "HDR and extended color". After transfer, the color reproduction of the desktop changes – the colors fade, everything looks like behind a graffiti. Finally, select "HDR video streaming" under Settings / Apps / Video playback. Finally, the desired Youtube HDR video will start over the edge browser – the display then switches to HDR mode and displays the video with bright colors.

If GPU, driver and display support HDR playback, the option "HDR and extended color" can be activated under Windows 10 1709. After the transfer, the colors of the desktop are visibly bleeding. (Image: heiseonline / ciw)

Nvidia does not work, AMD does not. In our test, Youtube HDR worked in combination with a GeForce GTX 1050 with 2 GB of video memory, the GeForce driver 387.92 and the HDR-capable computer monitor Samsung C27GH70 (2560 × 1440, 144 Hz, FreeSync, 670 Euro). Youtube uses the VP9.2 codec for playback in HDR mode, the conventional VP9 in non-HDR mode.

The AMD Radeon RX 550 could not be persuaded to play HDR movies with the latest Crimson ReLive 17.10.1 driver. It was possible to activate the HDR controller under Windows, which also changed the color space visibly. However, Youtbe relied on the AVC codec and did not play any HDR material. With the older driver Crimson 17.7, Youtube showed a very strong image (apparently HDR) for a few seconds, but then fell back into the pale mode after a few seconds. Even with AMD's current high-end flagship Radeon RX Vega 64, we could not extract HDR videos from Youtube. Maybe a driver update could provide a remedy, but this is certainly not the case.
Kaby Lake also fails in test Theoretically, the integrated processor architecture of Kaby-Lake processors dominates the HDR output. In practice, however, it did not work in our test – Windows 10 Case Creators Update does not even display the option "HDR and extended color" in the display settings with the current Intel Teiber. The "HDR-Video streamen" option is available but can not be activated (grayed out).
[Update:] CyberLink PowerDVD 17 Ultra plays HDR video on PCs with Kaby Lake (or Coffee Lake), Intel HD / UHD Graphics and HDMI 2.0-LSPCon; but it only works in full screen mode – and not with Netflix or Youtube.
Netflix will also be able to output 4K HDR video with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update – the test results will follow soon.
UDPATE: Netflix 4K and HDRMit Netflix shows 4K and HDR videos on Windows 10 (1709) video cards with at least 4 GB of video memory and are from the GeForce 1000 series, both via the Netflix app as also via the Edge browser. In the test, this worked with a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 4 GB, but not with a GeForce GTX 1050 2 GB. According to Nvidia, Netflix 4K requires a graphics card with at least 4 GB of video memory. On AMD graphics cards Netflix showed neither 4K nor HDR. With a Kaby-Lake processor, which showed Netflix 4K before the case Creators Update, Netflix now shows at most Full HD – possibly a future driver could help.
