In the Google Maps app for Android version 9.68, indoor maps are presented more prominently. There are also indications of a number of new features.

Google Maps has been providing building maps of airports, train stations, exhibition halls, museums, sports venues, shopping malls and other facilities for a number of years – including in Germany. However, many users simply overlook these building maps in the Google Maps app, because you usually have to zoom in to activate the map.
This will obviously change Google in the future, as the beta APK version 9.68 of Google Maps after a report by Android Police shows. According to the indoor maps should get a permanent place in the detail maps to the individual places.

Google wants users of Google Maps in the future better to point to existing indoor maps to buildings.
The building maps are not only available on Android mobile devices, but have long been supported by the iOS app. Combined with Bluetooth beacons or the evaluation of WLAN signals, the indoor maps can be used for pedestrian navigation in buildings. Apple has also been working intensively on indoor mapping for its own map app for several years.
Better guidance In the Beta-APK, among other things, a warning for motorists was found, according to which the selected target is out of the range of their own vehicle. This feature could be used, for example, to automatically alert the driver of an electric vehicle to charging stations in the vicinity. Of course, it still has to be clarified from where Google Maps knows the current charge level of the vehicle.
Also with the use of the public transport Google wants to grab the user in the future stronger under the arms. Thus, the beta provides to signal the user when he has to get off the train or the bus, where appropriate on which side the exit is and whether a platform change is necessary.
All this, of course, assumes that the data is correct. Especially a termination of the GPS connection can lead to incorrect information. The new app version is therefore intended to alert the user more clearly when the position determination is not possible or only to a limited extent. Finally, another option could ensure that only the offline maps regularly used by the user receive automatic updates.
