German economy disappointed with May's Brexit speech | News

BRSSEL / LONDON (dpa-AFX) – The German economy is disappointed at the British proposals for the period after Brexit. "The mood between London and Brussels remains chilly," warned DIHK President Eric Schweitzer on Friday after a keynote speech by Prime Minister Theresa May in London. "Sadly, Theresa May's speech did not help break the ice and give new impetus to the Brexit talks." It took a lot of creativity to pour the British agenda into an agreement between the UK and the European Union Schweitzer added. "But the economy needs a clear orientation." German exports have already fallen. "May's speech was not enough to stop this negative trend." Previously, the head of the Federation of German Industry, Dieter Kempf, had been concerned about the course of the Brexit negotiations. "From the point of view of the economy, we are concerned that the fronts on both sides tended and that there are no concrete results," said Kempf the German Press Agency. However, to avoid serious consequences for Brexit, which is scheduled for March 2019, it would need the most comprehensive trade and economic agreement possible./vsr/DP/jha
