Cuba promises mobile Internet in 2018. Up until now, Wi-Fi hotspots have been the main source of supply and cable Internet access is a luxury product that only a few Cubans can afford.

The Cuban telecommunications company Etecsa intends to introduce mobile internet on the socialist Caribbean island next year. "We are preparing to market mobile Internet next year and we are working to make that kind of access possible," Etecsa Mayra Arevich told state news portal CubaHoy on Friday. Further information on the type of access, the technology used and prices she did not initially.
So far, most Cubans can only dial into the Internet via Wi-Fi hotspots. There are over 200 hotspots in public places throughout the country. In remote areas, people tend to get by without the Internet, and some build local area networks without Internet connectivity within a village to share photos and messages.
In March, Etecsa launched a pilot project that will give private individuals Internet access in their homes for the first time. Previously, only certain professional groups such as doctors and journalists were allowed to have Internet at home. So far, around 11,000 customers are taking part in the pilot project – however, private Internet access is hardly affordable for most Cubans. A connection for 30 hours per month costs between 15 and 105 US dollars depending on the speed. The average monthly salary in Cuba is just under $ 30.
