Deferment for Stream-On: Telecom gets more time with streaming service – Economy

Deutsche Telekom appears to have difficulties adapting its controversial StreamOn offer to the requirements of the Federal Network Agency. The Supervisory Authority had criticized several points and gave Telekom a two-week deadline, which expired on Friday. "We have requested and received a deadline extension," a telecom spokesman said. The company has received a postponement until November 10th. When customers use StreamOn, video and music content from partners such as Netflix, Youtube or Spotify are not included in the monthly data volume. Critics refer to this as a violation of the principle of net neutrality, according to which all data must be treated equally. The Bundesnetzagentur had allowed the offer in principle, but complained that it could not be used in other EU countries. This contradicts the new roaming rules. In addition, the agency criticized the fact that video quality is reduced in a certain tariff. "We do not share the authority's legal position," Telekom said. "It only applies its own, very close interpretation of EU law". Whether Telekom is legally defending, is now further examined. Vodafone's offer is also being tested. Especially the foreign rule could be a key factor in the economic calculation. Because the Telekom must pay fees to the foreign providers, which are currently at 7.70 euros per gigabyte. If, for example, a customer is looking at a high-quality film, 25 euro or more will come together quickly. Vodafone's offer is also currently being tested. The competitor had introduced a similar service a month ago, which is still being examined by the Federal Network Agency. The investigation of Stream-On had attracted nearly half a year.
