Catalan regional president expects "democratic tsunami"

Berlin (Reuters) – The Catalan regional president, Carles Puigdemont, is expecting a high number of participants at the independence conference scheduled for Sunday. He assumes that millions of voters in a "democratic tsunami" are participating in the poll rejected by the Spanish central government , said Puigdemont of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" (Saturday issue) according to preliminary report. The latest police force, with more than ten million ballot papers seized, could not stop the Catalans. According to the report, Puigdemont was confident that the European Union would "pragmatically" adapt to the new situation. He reaffirmed his offer to enter into a dialogue immediately after the vote with the government in Madrid. For days, the Spanish government has been trying to remove the foundations by means of arrests, the blocking of web pages, or the confiscation of election slogans. The Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, rejects the popular vote as a threat to the unity of the country and sees itself confirmed by the Constitutional Court, which declared the vote inadmissible.
