Asaf Avidan, Eera, John Mouse, James Holden: The Pop Albums of the Week in the Soundcheck – Culture

Asaf Avidan: The Study On Falling (Universal) The Israeli songwriter Asaf Avidan pays homage to the Americana on his sixth album. "The Study On Falling" celebrates old styles, as if the musical development of the past 30 years had never taken place. Avidan loves the theatrical, the pathos, which adds glamor to his folk, blues and country designs. Unfortunately, the singer renounces in the design of his staid compositions on sophistication or even experimentation. He relies solely on the effect of his extraordinary voice. Torsten Groß, moderator
Eera: Reflection Of Youth (Big Dada) Born in Norway, Anna Lena Bruland, who lives in London, documents a moving part of her life on her debut album – the minefield between youth and adulthood. Focused, punchy and damned, she reflects on the work of a woman in today's music world and the emotional low points in the life of a young person. An alluring mix of Feist's clarity, raw Sonic Youth guitars, and the self-assured talk of a PJ Harvey. Sermin Usta, Intro
John Maus: Screen Memories (Border Community) The crazy New Wave solo entertainer and philosopher John Mouse is back after six years with his fourth album. Although he now plays on self-built modular synthesizers, his music sounds as sweeping as ever. His short, simple compositions are violent, Suicide as well as DAF are clear sound references. The reverb on Maus's voice often prevents the lyrics, which are laced with references to philosophers like Deleuze, from being intelligible and decipherable. Martin Hossbach, music curator
James Holden & The Animal Spirits: The Animal Spirits (Border Community) On the rocky path from laptop nerd to bandleader James Holden has taken a few shortcuts. While his solo albums were still dominated by the strict electronica master Aphex Twin, the Brit with an astonishingly versatile collective of musicians now explores an imaginary frontier between cosmic krautrock and far-reaching spiritual jazz. Sounds like Pharoah Sanders meets Cluster. Similarly good, but not as exhausting as Kamasi Washington. Jörg Wunder, Tagesspiegel
