After a Million Deficit: The Documenta Remains Nonprofit and Free – Culture

Monday, January 22nd, 2018 | bitcoin updates

The first brand letter was written by the Documenta artists themselves. In it they warned against access of local politics to the most important international exhibition of contemporary art and a provincialization, should the charitable nature be abandoned. The new Lord Mayor and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Documenta GmbH had previously announced that the next issue in five years would have to be taken more seriously to prevent a renewed financial debacle. With the end of Documenta 14 in September 2017, a deficit of around 5.4 million euros had come to light, which was caused not least by the double locations in Kassel and Athens. Behind the initiative of the local politicians was above all the desire to be able to better market the large event visited by around 900,000 people in the future. So far, the Documenta makers have always been able to insist on their artistic freedom. In mid-January, 135 museum people and artists sent another warning letter in which they demanded not only the maintenance of public interest and an increase in the last 34 million euro budget according to the importance of the art event, but also the continued employment of the CEO Annette Kulenkampff, the main culprit for the deficit had been blamed. The signers included Chris Dercon, director of the Schaubühne, filmmaker Alexander Kluge and the former Documenta curator Ruth Noack. This last letter has evidently caused a stir among local politicians. Kassel as a venue was already threatening to embarrass. Lord Mayor Christian Geselle announced at the New Year's reception of the city on Saturday that the World Art Exhibition will remain a non-profit organization in the future as well. At the same time, he announced that it would be necessary to examine how the company could be better set up financially, organizationally and personally. He received support from the Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier, who also promised at the reception that the country would take care of better financial resources. He wants to try to make more of the federal government, says Bouffier. At the same time, the term of the next edition has been announced, but it will remain at the five-year cycle: Documenta 15 will take place from 18 June to 25 September 2022. In addition, a search committee will soon be looking for an artistic director. The prospect of interesting candidates rises with these latest announcements, as well as the hope for a next Documenta, for which it is worthwhile to arrive from all over the world.
